Mijke de Waardt pursued her MSc degree in Educational Sciences in 2003, at the University of Amsterdam, with a specialization in social policy research. In 2005, at CEDLA (Centre for Latin American Research and Documentation) she obtained a MA degree in Latin American Studies. Her MA thesis was on identity construction of internally displaced people in Peru. After working for a couple of years in the profit sector, Mijke resumed her academic career at CEDLA and at VU university. Mijke successfully defended her PhD dissertation, In the name of the victims? Victim-survivor associations negotiating for recognition in post-conflict Peru, in 2014. The dissertation explores transitional justice practices in the aftermath of the internal armed conflict (1980-2000) in Peru. Based on twenty months of fieldwork, it analyzed the role of victim-survivor associations within transitional justice processes by considering the ways that organized victim-survivors, as well as governmental and non-governmental organizations, make sense of victim-survivors’ associations and of their priorities for transitional justice. In the summer of 2015, Mijke will be in Colombia, for a preliminary visit in preparation for a research grant proposal. The proposed project, Victim’s perspectives of Colombia’s peace processes, probes mainstream academic and policy approaches to transitional justice, emphasizing the examination of multi-actor approaches of transitional justice processes. Mijke works as an Assistant Professor in Social and Cultural Anthropology since November 2014.
