2010-2015:Small-scale gold mining and social conflict in the Amazon: Comparing states, environments, local populations and miners in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Suriname.
Over the last few decades, the growth in small-scale gold mining has resulted in environmental problems and socio-political conflicts in the Amazon. The countries affected include Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Suriname. Uncontrolled polluting activities of small-scale gold mining often threaten the livelihoods of indigenous peoples, but also the health of the miners themselves and their families. Cross-border tensions arise when miners from one country invade another, or smuggle gold between countries. With the recent instability in the world economy driving up the price of gold, and with techniques becoming more mechanised, the scale of such problems is increasing. The principal objective of this project, is to develop a comparative understanding of socio-political and environmental conflicts related to small scale gold mining in the Amazon, and contribute to their possible solution.

2007-nu:Goud in Suriname (werktitel).
2004-2006:Transnationalism in the Amazon: Brazilians in Suriname
"Grand Dreams": Brazilian migrants in Suriname. In search for security in transnational Amazon. In the past few years a large number of Brazilians has migrated to Suriname. According to journalistic sources as many as 40.000 Brazilians have found a home in the country since 1995, many of them as gold prospectors in the woods, but increasingly also in Paramaribo, where a neighborhood is called after one of the hometowns of these new migrants, Belém, the capital of the state of Pará in the north of Brazil. In the bordering Guyana's the influx of Brazilian migrants is also considerable. This recent Brazilian migration to the Guyanas gives rise to many questions related to contemporary processes of relocation of labor in the global context and in a regional context, the related flows of social and economic capital, and the transnational quest for human security. Why did these Brazilians come to Suriname in the first place? What are their aspirations and expectations? How do they adapt to the circumstances and their condition of illegal migrant in Suriname? This recent migration also brings to the fore questions of identity formation. Do these Brazilians establish a "Brazilian life" in Suriname or does the adaptation to the Surinamese society initiate a process of "creolisation"? What is the importance of identification with Brazil in their lives? Do they maintain transnational connections with migrants in other countries of the region, and if so, how?
