This class is about about the origins, history and contemporary diversity of the Chinese diaspora. The relationship between Chinese migration and colonialism will be covered, as well as the history of “Chinese exclusion” in the West. Also the diverse ways in which Chinese incorporated into postcolonial societies in Southeast Asia, and the contemporary role of Chinese migrants in European and African societies will be highlighted.
