Academic Foxes, Ethnographic Hedgehogs: Evidence, Local Knowledge, and Interpretive Analysis

13 januari 2006

What is the character of the “evidence” on which we base our knowledge claims?  Interpretive forms of analysis, such as ethnographic, participant-observer, ethno methodological, narrative, and discourse analytic methods, enable researchers to access the “local knowledge” of members of the situations under study, from organizations to public policies to communities and more, adding these to the ‘treasury’ of evidentiary bases for truth claims.  This lecture will touch on some of the research areas in which local knowledge figures, looking in particular at interpretive policy analysis and evidence-based policies; work practices and reflection-in- action; and space design.
