Social and Cultural Anthropology
Why study at VU University Amsterdam
Unique approach
The programme’s anthropological approach to the issue of human security is unique. It offers you a fascinating combination of intensive courses on human security and related issues, with time for individual research in the field of your choice. The central theme of Human Security is by no means a straightjacket. It functions as a conceptual tool or perspective, integrating the various programme components and offering a special focus.
"Anthropology is passion for human life. It is learning about others and yourself. Through close cooperation with lecturers and fellow students, this intensive Master’s programme taught me to be an anthropologist in theory and in practice. You study anthropology for yourself and for the world around you. I conducted a three-month field study in northern Uganda, with enthusiastic supervision by the faculty staff. It’s an experience that will stay with me for the rest of my life!"Stijn van Rest, Master’s student in Social and Cultural Anthropology |
Small-scale and personal
You will be closely involved in your fellow students’ projects – and they will return the favour – since we believe in stimulating group processes that enable students to coach one another. Another example of this approach is the reunion day after the fieldwork, when you will share your experiences with the other students. The two Master’s conferences during the year offer you the chance to present your ongoing research work to your fellow students, staff, and a wider audience. Moreover, the Master’s gives you ample opportunity to participate in staff research projects.
Dynamic and international
The Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology comprises a team of dynamic, English-speaking professionals working on a wide range of themes, from gender and kinship to conflict resolution and sustainable development. The teaching staff is international in terms of both working experience and nationality. The thematic design of the Master’s means that there are no constraints on students' choice of regional focus. We have an extensive international network and can draw on a wealth of experience in Asia, Africa, South America and Europe. We attract a large number of PhD students from abroad, as well as many guest speakers from the Netherlands and beyond.
Quality
In the most recent quality assessment, the Master’s programme was judged to be the best anthropology programme in the Netherlands by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders. The programme is challenging, tightly organized and enjoys a high success rate (over 90%). Our staff have published extensively and we have a successful record in attracting funds for PhD research.
