The Department of Political Science invites you to the International Research Seminar by Prof. dr. James Bratt (Calvin College, Grand Rapids MI)
In his paper, Prof. Bratt argues that Kuyper's doctrine of sphere sovereignty is better understood when studied in relation to the concepts of divine sovereignty, republicanism, and Calvinism as a guard of modern liberties. The paper explains how Kuyper's understanding of sphere sovereignty fits in with the political theory that Kuyper delivered in other circumstances.
James Bratt is Professor of History at Calvin College and Director of Calvin’s Center for Christian Scholarship. His areas of specialization include 19th-century American history and Protestant immigration to America. He is the editor of Abraham Kuyper: A Centennial Reader (Eerdmans, 1998) and author of Dutch Calvinism in Modern America: A History of a Conservative Subculture (Eerdmans, 1984) and co-editor with Edouard Dommen of Calvin Rediscovered. The Impact of his Social and Economic Thought (John Knox Press, 2007). James Bratt is currently on sabbatical at the Roosevelt Study Center in Middelburg (Zeeland), the Netherlands, where he holds the Fulbright-Dow Distinguished Research Chair. He is researching and writing a biography on the Dutch theologian,
politician, and scholar Abraham Kuyper. Please join us for the presentation, discussion and drinks afterwards!
