National and International co-operation
The senior members of the research programme SoCA (Knipscheer, Van Tilburg, Broese van Groenou, Thomése and Van Rijsselt) are embedded in several international informal and formal networks of researchers on aging. In 2005 the group organised a workshop on ‘Diversity in late life’ in Amsterdam, in which a large number of international leading scholars in the field participated, amongst others Prof. Vern Bengtson (USA), Prof. Merrill Silverstein (USA), Prof. Toni Antonucci and Prof. J. Jackson (USA), Prof. Gunhild Hagestad (Norway), Prof. Dale Dennefer (USA) and Prof. Tesch Roemer (Germany).
Regarding the issue of neighbourhood and network involvement, Prof. van Tilburg and dr. Thomése are preparing a cross-national study with European researchers, amongst others from the UK (Prof. Scharf, Prof. Phillipson) and Germany (Prof. Tesch Roemer). Regarding the issue of informal care, dr. Broese van Groenou has well-established contacts with European researchers, in particular in the ESF-scientific research group FAMSUP, with whom research articles are published and grant proposals are prepared. Prof. Knipscheer has participated in EUROFAMCARE, a EU-funded project on informal care.
All senior members are a member of the Gerontological Society of America and participate regularly in the yearly meetings of this society. Prof. van Tilburg is chair of the Board of the Centre for Aging Research of the VU University Amsterdam. Prof. van Tilburg and Prof. Knipscheer are, with dr. van Rijsselt, involved in the organisation of EUMAG, a European Master in Gerontology.
