National and International co-operation


Koopmans is co-ordinator of the cross-national research consortium EUROPUB (The transformation of political mobilisation and communication in European public spheres) involving VU University Amsterdam, Universiteit van Amsterdam, Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung, Universität Hohenheim, University of Leeds, Universität Zürich, Universidad de Barcelona, Università di Firenze, and CRAPS-CNRS Lille. In the context of this project, he organised the international conference “The European Union and the Public Sphere” in Brussels in November 2004.

Koopmans was the co-ordinator of the cross-national research consortium MERCI (Mobilization on Ethnic Relations, Citizenship and Immigration) involving VU University Amsterdam, Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung, University of Leeds, Université de Genève, and Université de Lausanne, which was concluded in 2005.

Koopmans is a research Associate of the Centre for Comparative Immigration Studies, University of California, San Diego, and a member of the editorial advisory board of Mobilization. The International Journal on Protest and Contentious Politics.

In 2002 Saharso was co-organiser with Prof. Bader (UvA) of the expert seminar ‘Ethno-Religious Cultures, Identities and Political Philosophy. Contextualised Morality: Problems and Prospects’. Saharso is co-chair with Prof. Philips (UK) of an international network and co-organiser of two conferences in 2005 and 2006 on ‘Gender equality, cultural diversity: European comparisons and lessons’.

Smets is a research associate of the International Centre for Development and Environmental Studies, Lancashire, UK and co-editor of the Global Built Environment Review. He was co-organiser with Dr. Salman (VU University Amsterdam) of the international working conference ‘Countering Urban Segregation’ at the VU University Amsterdam in 2004.
