have the honor to invite you to attend the workshop "Changing Approaches to Development in Cambodia"
Phnom Penh
January 09-10, 2009
This workshop addresses the issue of changing approaches to development in Cambodia. The focus will be on cooperation between the parties involved in processes of economic development, peace-building and democratization. Currently investments, aid and donor money comes from a myriad of stakeholders, such as international organizations, foreign direct investors, returning Cambodian nationals and local NGOs.
The questions to be raised:
What models for development do these stakeholders bring along? What are the differences between local and foreign approaches, and between different foreign ones? How do organizations working for peace, development and democracy in Cambodia deal with these different perspectives and approaches? How can the cooperation among the multiple actors - local and international, academic and practitioner – be improved? How can higher education contribute to a better understanding of current transformations in development in order to equip young Cambodians to play a leading role in the management of change?
The workshop aims at:
- identifying and analyzing the contribution of international and local actors to political stability and economic growth in Cambodia,
- defining the needs for capacity building among Cambodian institutes of higher education and local NGOs
- organizing a long-term process of joint learning through exchange of experience and knowledge among all actors involved.
The aimed outcome is to set up an international research programme and international exchange forum through which knowledge and perspectives about these issues can be generated and shared, and capacities strengthened.
