Workshop 2007
In August (16-18) 2007, the Cambodia Research Group organized a workshop in cooperation with Pannasastra University of Cambodia in Phnom Penh. The workshop was titled:
"Cooperation for peace and prosperity in Cambodia"
This workshop addressed the issue of modernization in Cambodia. The focus was on cooperation between all parties involved in processes of economic development, peacebuilding and democratization. Currently investments, aid and donor money comes from a myriad of stakeholders, such as international organizations, foreign direct investors, returning Cambodian nationals and local NGOs.
Therefore, the workshop raised questions such as:
- What models for development do these stakeholders bring along?
- What are the differences between local and foreign approaches, and between different foreign ones?
- How do organizations working for peace, development and democracy in Cambodia deal with these different perspectives and approaches?
- How can the cooperation among the multiple actors - local and international, academic and practitioner - be improved?
The workshop aimed at:
- identifying and analyzing the contribution of international and local actors to political stability and economic growth in Cambodia
- defining the needs for capacity building among Cambodian institutes of higher education and local NGOs
- organizing a long-term process of joint learning through exchange of experience and knowledge among all actors involved
The aimed outcome is to set up an international research programme and international exchange forum through which knowledge and perspectives about these issues can be generated and shared, and capacities strengthened.
