The VU-Graduate School of Social Sciences
Welcome to the VU-Graduate School of Social Sciences

The Graduate School of Social Sciences at VU University Amsterdam, VU-GSSS, brings PhD candidates and Master of Research students together with established researchers and teachers at the faculty in one learning community, to benefit all through their enhanced collaboration and shared dialogue.
The VU Graduate School of Social Sciences, established in 2010, is committed to excellent social research and engaged scholarship. Our Graduate School offers a 2-year International Research Master programme and a 4-year doctoral education. The creation of an integrated Graduate School maximises the synergies of these two programmes.
The Graduate School facilitates peer-socialization supported by a strong international orientation of both the PhD and MSR programmes in terms of an increasing influx of international students, Master and PhD research conducted in international contexts, and the participation of international fellows and visiting scholars in the program.
Prof. dr. Heidi Dahles
Academic Director of the VU-GSSS
We aim at integrating outstanding areas of graduate education and research in the Faculty of Social Sciences, one of the largest faculties at VU University Amsterdam. The VU-GSSS is founded upon the core disciplines of political science, sociology, anthropology, organization sciences, governance studies and communication sciences. Research in the Faculty of Social Sciences is of a high level, often at the cutting edge of academic scholarship in the disicplines covered in the Faculty. Young researchers in training find in the VU-GSSS an appealing environment in which to mature as independent and critical academics.
Located on the southern borders of the city of Amsterdam as an integral part of the Amsterdam Business District, the VU-GSSS benefits from the amenities of one of the most famous cultural tourist destinations in the world.
