Female Talented Scholars working group

On 30 June 2010 the working group ‘Female Talented Scholars’ was established in order to boost career opportunities of female scholars within the Faculty of Social Sciences, and to make female academic talent more visible.

The members of the working group are Marjolein Broese Van Groenou (SOC), Heidi Dahles (chairperson, ORG), Josien Hagen (secretary, P&O), Elly Konijn (CW) and Marjo de Theije (SCA).

The working group is developing, among others, a career trajectory, a fellowship, workshops and a tutorship.

Workshop on 8th March

On 8th March, International Women’s Day, the working group ‘Female Talented Scholars’ organizes an annual seminar with lectures by various external and internal guest speakers, as well as discussions and workshops.

Jenny Gierveld Fellowship

The Faculty Management (FB) has established the Jenny Gierveld Fellowship. This fellowship offers female assistant professors a two-year appointment including a  promotion to associate professor, so they can present themselves at their best in their specific field of teaching and research.
The fellowship is named after emeritus professor Jenny Gierveld, who has been a champion of  better positions for women in science, and her impressive academic record has been an inspiration for other female scientists. The Faculty Board (FB) nominated the first two Jenny Gierveld Fellows in January 2011, upon the recommendation of the department heads and nomination by the working group ‘Female Talented Scholars’.

Moreover, the working group has granted a six-months scholarship to a talented female scientist to enable her to prepare a VENI application.

Tutorship

The working group ‘Female Talented Scholars’ supports ‘the mentoring project' of the Centre for Career and Development. In this project senior professors are coupled with talented postdocs, lecturers and senior lecturers, who are still finding their way around the scientific world. The idea is that conversations with the senior professors will provide them with better insights into questions like: How do you make your presence more visible within and outside the faculty? How can you take more control of your own career trajectory? How do you obtain external financial support for your research? The mentors and mentees come preferably from different faculties. The heads of the faculties are requested to propose talented academics for the tutorship. The working group ‘Female Talented Scholars’ chooses five mentees from the ones recommended.
