PhD programme
The main purpose of the PhD programme is to train PhD students on an individual basis to become independent, fully qualified researchers in the field of social science. The CCSS hosts around 60 PhD students.
Training is tailored to suit individual requirements and includes a number of courses offered both via staff of the CCSS and through our (inter)national disciplinary networks with associated research schools. In the first year PhD students begin working on their research project and follow taught courses. According to the needs and interests of the student, the coursework is developed in collaboration with their supervisor including a “training and guidance plan” within the first three months. The student's research progress is assessed at the end of the first year on the basis of a submitted research proposal or term paper.
The PhD programme provides its PhD students a number of financial sources: a training budget (for research school membership, enrollment in courses), a personal budget (for all purposes that will benefit the project) and a biannual competition for an extra fund to stimulate the programme's international orientation.
The programme is governed by the PhD programme Board, chaired by the director of the programme, Prof. dr. Henk W. Overbeek.
