Sawitri Saharso also receives NWO grant for journal

The sociologist Sawitri Saharso was rewarded a grant to launch the new open access journal International Journal of Comparative Migration Studies.

Saharso wil work with Peter Scholten (Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam) and Erik van Aert (Amsterdam University Press). The journal has an international editing board, in which Saharso and Scholten are the managing editors.

The International Journal of Comparative Migration Studies (IJCMS) will be launched to provide a new peer reviewed outlet for the publication of comparative research in the field of migration and immigrant integration studies. This field has evolved rapidly over the past decades, with contributions from a variety of disciplines such as sociology, anthropology, political sciences and economics. Also in methodological terms, the field has become increasingly diverse.

The new journal is to distinguish itself from existing journals based on at least three features. First of all, its explicit international comparative orientation: we believe that a focus on comparative research can promote the theoretical development of our field. This can involve various types of comparative studies (between countries, groups, levels, historical periods). Secondly, the journal aims to develop a broader disciplinary angle than existing journals: besides the traditional disciplines such as sociology and anthropology, aiming also at the political sciences and economics. Thirdly, it will be an open access journal: we believe open access is the best way to make sure that articles are widely read.
