Graduating starts with the Thesis Market

On Tuesday 11 October and Thursday 13 October the thesis market for students in the Master’s programmes of Beleid, communicatie en organisatie (Policy, Communication and Organization) and Culture, Organization and Management took place.

During the Thesis Market the teachers of the Department of Organization Sciences at VU University open their doors to students to discuss ideas for their thesis research. One of the many attending students was Jamila Abendanon, student in the Master’s programme of Culture, Organization and Management.

What do you think of the Thesis Market?
“I must admit it’s a little scary. But I took the courage to walk into a room of a teacher, introduced myself and the most pleasant conversation begun. It was really nice being able to meet a lot of potential thesis supervisors, and to listen to them telling about their own research. It was one of the best opportunities to meet your ‘perfect’ supervisor. You had the ability to test the match between you and your supervisor not only on the basis of the subject of your thesis, but also on the personal level.”

It sounds a bit like you were checking each other out.
“The market indeed gave me a little of  ‘The Voice of Holland’-feeling. Your subject has to fall into the interest and research of your supervisor, but with a good idea you are almost wanted by every supervisor. “

Did you have to prepare a lot?
“In the invite for the thesis market it said I had to present my thesis idea to teachers. That raised a lot of questions and fears, but of course I was also curious. I did not know what to expect from a market filled with teachers, students and also theses. When I came here I still did not know what I had to do. But now I think that everyone who missed this market really missed a great opportunity for a good start of their Master’s thesis.”
