Laura Horn wins post-doc competition

Dr. Laura Horn, assistant professor in Political Science at VU University Amsterdam, has won the annual post-doc competition of the Netherlands Institute of Government.

With the allotment, Horn can start a two year research project on European trade unions.Horn’s research studies the role and political strategies of trade unions at the European level. Focusing on the area of financial market regulation and corporate governance regulation, the research seeks to map and explain the changes in trade union strategies in the time period from the reemergence of the Single Market Programme in the 1980s till the current financial and economic crisis. Financial market and corporate governance regulation constitute policy areas that are at the heart of European market integration. Moreover, it is in these policy areas that alternative policies in the context of the financial crisis are now emerging, at the national as well as the supra- and international level. The research will identify and map trade unions responses to these regulatory developments in the specified time period through archival research and document analysis. Drawing on an extensive range of in-depth interviews with representatives from trade unions, civil society organisations and EU organisations, the project will then examine the institutional, organisational and political position of organised labour at the European level.
