Higher education systems in most of the Latin American countries are undergoing a transformation process. Despite significant differences in size and development of their higher education systems, they have important elements in common. This refers especially to the priorities set by the respective governments and also by the higher education institutions themselves. They all are in a period of rapid expansion at the undergraduate and – especially – at the postgraduate level. This is not only due to the population’s growth and to the fact that Latin American societies have a high percentage of young people. But it is also related tot the rapidly expanding percentage of students’ enrolment of the total population between 18 and 24 years (female students enrolment being the most dynamic in some countries). This expansion of the whole system creates an increasing demand of well-trained academics as university teachers and researchers.
The Dutch and other European higher education systems are in a period of rapid change due to the introduction of the Bachelor/master system in these countries. The purpose of this new system is to make the higher education systems in various countries more compatible. Because Brazil is using the Bachelor/master system, co-operation between Dutch and Brazilian universities will become easier.
