Social Research
Why study at VU University Amsterdam
Intensive and interdisciplinary
The programme will provide you with intensive training in the multidisciplinary field of social sciences. Not only will you follow small-scale seminars and tutorials, you will also have a research internship within the faculty. You will learn about and discuss topics like globalization, welfare states and social interaction networks. In this way you have the opportunity to view issues from different angles within the broad scope of social sciences.
“What I like about Social Research is the freedom to compose my own programme, the international and in-depth academic experience and the personal approach. Lecturers are passionate about their work and genuinely care about the student´s progress. My fellow students come from all over the world: China, Turkey, Estonia, Morocco. Their visions and stories really give me unique insights into international social issues.“Michel Scholte, Master’s Student in Social Research |
Qualitative and quantitative approach
The programme trains you in both qualitative and quantitative modes of enquiry and adheres to the precept that the basic model of scientific inquiry, whether qualitative or quantitative, is that of a comparative research design, explicit theory formulation and systematic empirical observation.
Flexible programme and expert staff
Our students benefit from training in frequently held, small-scale seminars in which dedicated tutors provide intensive advice and supervision. You will find the programme to be academically challenging due to the combination of key social theories, the development of advanced research skills during intensive tutorials in small groups and the close interaction with leading researchers who are engaged in inspiring and socially engaging research projects.
