Social and Cultural Anthropology

Specializations

During the second half of the theoretical orientation of the programme you will opt for one of two specializations:

  • Constructing Identities and Notions of Belonging
  • Development and Social Transformations

Constructing Identities and Notions of Belonging
This specialization examines the numerous ways in which people form imagined, ritualistic or face-to-face communities to shield themselves from feelings of anxiety, fear, risk, threat, alienation and exile. The central issues are migration, community construction, identity politics, violence and the pursuit of religious certainty.

Development and Social Transformations
In this specialization you learn about the physical but culturally entangled aspects of human security, tackling a broad spectrum of issues, including natural resource management, poverty and sustainable development, dispute resolution, gender issues, forced migration and international peacekeeping.
