Accommodation

Finding good, affordable accommodation can be a problem in the Netherlands, especially in Amsterdam. In the Netherlands, students usually have their own bedroom and, in most cases, bathroom, kitchen and living room must be shared with other students. It is common that male and female students live together in the same student house. Given the shortage of good accommodation, you may find the room you get is rather small and not of the standard you had expected. Accommodation in Amsterdam is not only limited, but can also be more expensive than at home. Thinking about these things in advance could help avoid unpleasant surprises later.

The International Office of VU University Amsterdam is able to provide accommodation for short-stay foreign Exchange students at the University. The minimum period of rent is 1 semester, with a maximum of 12 months. Accommodation consists of furnished rooms with private or shared facilities. The number of rooms and apartments is limited, so we cannot guarantee to find accommodation for everyone. Nevertheless, the International Office does its utmost best to find suitable accommodation. You can find more information regarding the university accommodation here.

Most of the university accommodation is located at Uilenstede, the university campus. In order to improve your chances of obtaining accommodation via the International Office, you are strongly advised to apply well in advance. When you are accepted as an exchange student you will receive information on the application procedure for accommodation. In May you will receive information about accommodation for the first semester or the whole year. In November you will receive information about accommodation for the second semester.
