Education
The Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology offers a Bachelor’s and a Master’s in Anthropology. The language of tuition of the Bachelor’s degree is Dutch (with some courses taught in English) and the language of tuition of the Master’s is English.
Master’s programmes
The international Master’s Social and Cultural Anthropology attracts students from the Netherlands and abroad. Our Master’s was evaluated as the best in the Netherlands by the latest national assessment of Anthropology departments.

Bachelor’s programme
The Bachelor’s degree course Culturele antropologie en ontwikkelingssociologie (Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology) offers four variants. After the introductory first year, students choose between:
- Sociale en culturele antropologie (Social and cultural anthropology)
- Organisatieantropologie (Anthropology of organizations)
- Ontwikkelingssociologie (Development sociology)
- Historische antropologie (Historical anthropology)
Many students opt to study one semester abroad in the third year.
The Department cooperates with many universities across the world for this purpose. There are also numerous opportunities for practical training, in the Netherlands or elsewhere.
