Research

After obtaining his Master’s degree in Political Science with a specialization in Public Administration from the University of Amsterdam in 2001, Zeger van der Wal (1977) starting working as a policy maker for the Municipality of Amsterdam, and later as a project assistant for a regional government organization. In 2003 he joined the VU University of Amsterdam as a Ph.D. candidate, and he obtained his Ph.D. (cum laude) from this University in 2008.
dr. van der Wal currently works as an assistant professor within the research group ‘Integrity of Governance’ on several research projects that concern the differences, similarities and conflicts between the organizational values of (para)public and business organizations and managers, as well as public service motivation. In 2008, he was awarded the NIG post doc award which will finance an international comparative research project into the values and motivations of top-level public managers and politicians: Elite Ethics (2009-2012).

Zeger is a member of professional organizations in the fields of public administration and business ethics and a Senior Member of the Netherlands Institute of Government (NIG). He has published on the issue of organizational value differences between sectors, as well as on broader administrative ethics, public service motivation and public management issues in national and international journals and books.
